Josquin des Pres: Composer

Jimmy Kachulis: Transcribed, edited and arranged

A thrilling depiction the glory of the Deity whose magnificence is above the heavens, this piece has all the characteristics of the great master of the 15th and 16 century Josquin des Pres: imitations clearly reflecting the textural accents in every part, and an overall structure that won't be heard again until the twentieth century: the psalm tone cantus is re-stated in ever increasing time values: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, and 6/4.

Text:
O God our God, how glorious is your name over all the earth! Your magnificence is elevated above the heavens.
You are praised from of the mouths of babes, you will may destroy the enemy
I behold the heavens, the works of your fingers: the moon and the stars
What are people that you are mindful of them?

Or the son of man that thou visits him?
You made them a little lower than the angels, you crowned them with glory and honor:
And set them over the works of your hands.
You subjected all things under their feet, sheep, oxen: and the beasts of the fields, birds of the air, and the fishes that pass through the paths of the sea.
O God our God, how glorious is your name over all the earth!

paraphrase c J. Kachulis
